How do you take control of the most precious aspect of life – time…
How many times have you heard “oh, I haven’t got the time…” ?? I come across many people making this statement and then maybe expecting the world to change without actually doing something to change this. So here we need to look at the routine and tasks to see actually what is essential and what is not.
Let’s look at when we do the essential tasks. So many people put off doing essential tasks until later in the day, making the fundamental mistake of doing habitual tasks maybe first thing in the morning, when energy levels are really high. Do you find yourself doing exactly the same tasks each morning? Checking emails? Things that can be done blindfolded. The challenge is to capitalise on whenever is the best part of YOUR day, thereby converting that energy into productivity.
Take a look at your own routine. What would happen if you changed just one thing? What would change? Your life would not change dramatically, however, your productivity would.
Can you change any of these daily tasks?
1. Checking your emails first thing. Can they be left until later on, after you have completed maybe more essential tasks from the previous day. New emails are an interruption.
2. If you have a pop-up on your computer that tells you there is new mail – turn it off. This can easily steal half an hour of precious time.
3. When you do open an email or letter – deal with it there and then. Don’t put off actions when you don’t need to. By returning to the email it takes more time. Try “one touch paperwork”, deal with it and file it.
4. If you have a To-Do list, write down an anticipated time to complete each task. This will help you plan your day much more effectively.
5. Prioritise – if you prioritise your day, make sure you do your less favourable tasks first. That way the day will always get better. Plus you will feel better when you’ve bitten the bullet and done those less favourable tasks first. It will be a whole weight off your shoulders.
So the morale to this is, if you have no time, it’s down to you. You can change just by changing small things. They will make a big difference.
